Why Daniel will love his new school

Catherine has a friend, Gina. One day she was telling Catherine on the phone that she had lost her learner's permit. Catherine was relaying this to me and told me how she had said to Gina, "well, that can happen." To which Gina replied, "You don't understand. You don't have Asian parents. This is a disaster." Tonight I drove Gina home across the valley. I asked how her parents had decided to bring their kids over to school here and she said that someone had told her dad (first generation) which schools were best and so they just committed to the commute. Every day her mom gets home at 3am from her job at a bakery, sleeps for three hours and then gets up and drives the three kids across town to school. Dad picks them up in the late afternoon after mom has gone back to work and he is done with his work shift. And I grumble about the occasional school run that takes me 10 minutes total...

Up and at 'em

Managed to get myself into work today, but drew masses of sympathy every time I erupted with a chesty cough. Actually it was probably more like "would you please go home, you walking tower of germs." Had to tackle Russian study abroad stuff. The effort of sending a few students there for a few weeks is herculean as it was last year. Today I clicked on the DHL website just to start figuring out where to drop off the signed, stamped original Russian contract in the next couple of days only to see on their main page a blinking item which, of course, had to do with Russia. I mean how many war torn, god forsaken countries do they ship to? And the place that makes the blinking advisory slot is Russia! Turns out I would only have problems if I wanted to ship a non-document to a private individual. Whew. I have a document and an institution so I should be good to go. Then it was a quick check of all the students' visa documents and the inevitable - did you get an HIV test - email to a couple of them. I mean this is way more information than I am really comfortable with.
Work Catherine wanted to know if I was coming to zumba and I told her that sitting in my desk chair for four hours was all the zumba I could handle today.

memorial day weekend

Managed to get a picture of the birds in their nest. They seem to be thriving despite my vicious pruning of their habitat.

But mainly I have been demolished by a wicked spring cold. Here is my bedside table.

We did go out for one drive. Catherine piloted the car to drop Sam off at a neighborhood friend's house. Apart from her propensity to stop 25 feet before getting to any stop sign....she did well.
